FOCALROOM / GETTING STARTED
Quick Guide
See the product direction page for the status of research boards, narrative canvas, editing round-trips and publishing. This guide does not present planned features as released steps.
Product direction ↗Start with a manual edit, then add an Agent or collaborators as needed. These steps cover implemented workflows; follow the labels shown in the actual app.
This guide is available in Chinese, English, Japanese and Korean. Website language is independent of the desktop app and shared workspace; switching here does not change their interfaces.
1. Create a project and import photos
On desktop, create a new project, enter a name and creative brief, then import photos or a folder. Originals stay where they are; the app creates references and preview caches.
Keep camera cards and external drives accessible. To inspect originals after removing a card, copy them to a stable folder before importing. Cache files are not original-file backups.
2. Select, sequence and save a version
Use K to keep, X to reject, U to mark undecided, 1–5 to rate and 0 to clear a rating. Save notes explicitly. Ratings and selection are independent; rejection never deletes the original.
Open the sequence view and drag to reorder, or use move up/down. Named versions preserve selection, order, ratings and saved notes. Use undo or version restoration to revise formal edits.
An original, a RAW-embedded JPEG and a derived preview are different sources. Read the source label before judging detail. This is not full RAW development or a professional print-color workstation.
3. Give the Agent a clear brief
Open the selection workspace and choose AI selection. Describe your creative goal in the conversation, choose the count and scope, and check which photos will be analyzed before starting.
Select 12 frames for a quiet coastal series. Avoid repetition and suggest an order with reasons. Open with space; close with traces of people.
AI features depend on account allowance and service availability. A task may inspect only part of a project. Check coverage and draft reasoning rather than treating suggestions as final decisions.
4. Review before accepting
Inspect the draft diff: photos, reasons, additions, removals and moves. Accept some items, explicitly replace the sequence, or discard it. Generating a draft does not change formal selection.
If the baseline is stale, compare again or start a new task. Resume budget pauses only with explicitly chosen limits. Model, consent or memory changes may require a new task.
5. Separate text, image and sharing consent
Real text tasks may send goals, filenames and notes to the configured service. Visual tasks send re-encoded JPEG previews up to 1,400px. Check the actual observation service and model, then allow for this task, this project, or deny images.
Revoking permission stops future sends but cannot recall content already sent. Clearing local observation caches does not delete the provider’s records.
6. Inspect evidence and correct memory
In preference memory, inspect human evidence, hypotheses and counterexamples. Confirm, correct, disable or retire hypotheses, or exclude evidence from learning. Deleting a current record does not clear all history and backups.
Cross-project memory is off by default and currently lets only the offline Agent cite eligible local-project clues. Shared projects and cloud models are excluded. Follow the prompt to start a new task after memory changes.
8. Export and care for your data
Export project JSON, selection CSV, contact sheets, print references, metadata sidecars or shared preview packages from desktop. Choose a new name and inspect the result. Local paths are omitted by default; entered text may still contain private information.
Print references export as HTML for browser printing to PDF. For a complete local backup, quit the app and copy its data directory; back up originals separately. Shared-service administrators must also back up the database and preview objects.
